about

This is a set of tunes I wrote in January 2023 at the prompting of Jon Atkinson at Bigtone Records. They are also available as singles, with great art for each by Asa Jones.

The compositions are loosely inspired by - or impressions of - the sounds of Sidney Bechet, but they're kind of wrong, get it? The album is also a comment on my own struggles with keeping up appearances.

1. Batture Nature - The Batture is a lovely neighborhood built on the river side of the New Orleans levee - technically outside of the city - so that they don't have to pay city taxes.

2. Snake Drag - this tune is called Snake Drag. Snake Rag is a traditional number and a favorite of one of my employers. This is how I would rather the song sounded.

3. The Nunnery - up to you.

4. Walking Briskly Down Main Street - is named in honor of another popular song played often in New Orleans, also about walking down a street.

5. Little Forget-Me-Nots - is based loosely on the verse to Alice Blue Gown, a song which old timers tell me was popular with the World War I vets who used to take the pleasure cruises on the local paddle wheelers.

6. Floral Wallpaper - it sounded like floral wallpaper to me when I wrote it.
